Logan County has a wealth of natural and scenic
beauty for visitors, including Mount
Magazine State Park.
The Lodge at Mt. Magazine, a beautiful Lodge
featuring restaurants, suites, individual cabins
and a breathtaking view, is also the state's newest
lodge. It is located 16 miles south of Paris on
Scenic 309 Byway, rising from the Ozark National
Forest at 2,753 feet above sea level. Mount Magazine
offers tourists not only the serenity of its natural
beauty with scenic overlooks and historical significance,
but also provides areas to tourists for camping,
picnicking, hiking horseback riding, hang gliding,
and rappelling. On a clear day, you can see 40
miles. Come take a look at our vistas and enjoy
our many recreational opportunities.

Cove Lake/Mt. Magazine Ranger District - This
pristine mountain lake is located along Scenic Byway
309 between Paris and Mt. Magazine State Park, 9 miles
from Paris. The developed recreation area offers visitors
a variety of outdoor pleasures including swimming,
hiking, boating, camping, and fishing. Cove Lake Recreation
Area is operated by concessionaire from May 1 to September
15. Concession operations include cabin rentals, paddle
boat and canoe rentals, miniature golf course, and
food service.
The
100,000 acre Mt. Magazine Ranger District is part
of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests. Located
just south of Paris, the forest provides visitors
to Logan County with a multitude of outdoor recreational
opportunities.

Ouachita
National Forest - Part of this scenic forest extends
into Logan County, making it one of only two counties
in the state to include two national forests. Several
recreation areas offer scenic camping and swimming.

Scenic
Byway 309 - Designated in 1992, this scenic byway
is a fabulous mountain drive from downtown Paris south
to Havana. The 26 mile route passes through a mixture
of rural communities and forest land of the Mt. Magazine
Ranger District. The Byway not only provides visitors
with scenic views and access to recreation, it also
is a highway to history. Mt. Magazine,
named from a French word meaning storehouse,
is a storehouse of history with numerous cultural
treasures.

Blue
Mountain Lake - Just north of the Ouachita National
Forest, this area on the Petit Jean River has water
sports and seasonal hunting opportunities in its surrounding
forests.

Subiaco
Abbey and Academy - Established by
the Benedictine monks in 1878, this school stretches
over the crest of gentle green slopes just east of
Paris on State Scenic Highway 22. Facilities include
the Subiaco Academy, a world-renowned college preparatory
school for boys in grades 9 - 12, Coury Guest House,
and the Subiaco Monastery Museum. Visitors are always
welcome to tour the grounds at their leisure, or guided
tours are available upon request.

-N. Logan County Seat, known as the "Gateway
to Mount Magazine," is located at the crossroads
of State Scenic Highway 22 and Scenic 309 Byway in
the Arkansas River Valley. Crystal-clear lakes and
beautiful mountains form the backdrop for this thriving
community named for Paris, France. The Paris Historic
District and Logan County boast over 25 listings on
the National Historic Register, including the Old
Paris Jail, site of the last legal hanging in Arkansas,
the Logan County Courthouse, and Gill "Rock"
Houses. Annual festivals celebrated include the state-renowned
Mount Magazine Frontier Day held at the courthouse
square, Freedom Fest (4th of July Celebration) and
the
Mount Magazine International Butterfly Festival
(at the top of Mount Magazine).

Shoal
Bay - Corps of Engineers Lake Area (Dardanelle)
has a boat dock and ramp, group pavilion, swim beach,
playground, Bridge Rock Nature Trail, amphitheater,
water shows, facilities and camping.

Mills-Ahne
Bridge - Just north of Scranton, the longest bridge
in Arkansas (1 1/2 miles) crosses Lake Dardanelle,
an impoundment of the Arkansas River. It is just off
I-40 on Highway 109 from Clarksville into Logan County.

Scenic
Highway 22 - This beautiful route takes you by
Subiaco Abbey & Academy and other points of interest
as it travels west from Dardanelle.
- Ozarks
National Forest - Covering more than one million
acres, the southernmost portion runs along the Arkansas
River Valley south to the Ouachita Mountains.

Within the museum you will see commercial and home wine
making equipment. Most of these items are from wineries
that are no longer active. They enable you to see the process
as it was many years ago and follow this art step by step
from the grape to the bottle.

Evans Museum

The Evans Museum is dedicated to preserving the past. Here
you can see military items from past wars, dolls, Indian
artifacts, and toys. There is indeed something here for
the whole family to enjoy seeing and learning about. There
is no admission charge; however, donations are accepted
and welcome. Plan on bringing your family by soon for a

This restored jail is the site of the last state-sanctioned
hanging in Arkansas (It happened back in 1914). Prisoners
were kept in an iron cages upstairs, while the jailer and
his family lived downstairs. Displays on permanent exhibit
at the Museum include the history of local mining, the development
and demise of the county's railroads, the history and impact
of the Smith family of doctors, numerous Indian artifacts,
and vintage quilts and other needlework. Main entrance exhibit
themes change monthly. |
